klingeling * ting-a-ling...

...or the best things in life are free!

simple but brilliant...my favorite mixture!
as a hoplessly perfectionist aesthete, that's just how I roll, the look of our home improvement market- bell box sucks...for quite a while now. lately, a friend brought a nice postcard from london. after I arranged it on the kitchen sill (I really like the pattern), I had a great idea on my way upstairs..."it's the perfect bell box cover"..
and now, I have my ting-a-ling highlight and a small artwork as well!

happy camper...

when I was really young, about 18 years old, I restored an old caravan together with my then-boyfriend...first, we tore out all the rotten fixtures (seats, kitchen unit etc.) till it was completely emty, polished it to a high gloss and started to rebuild the interior design...what a pleasure!
today, twenty years later, there is no caravan and no then-boyfriend any more...but still the crazy passion for enlivening an old jewel on four wheels and travel from one magic place to the other.
here is a small choice of suggestions...just looking at it, means pure delight to me...maby there is something for you too!

...hoffnungslos romantisch!

today, I discovered "my cool caravan" in a bookstore and it came just in the right time...the pic's are great and there are a wide variety of different caravan models and interior designs.
while I was reading, I started seriously thinking of selling your home and go for a life in a caravan...soooo romantic!

the gypsy in me...

...or should I rather decide to live an easygoing, wildly romantic bohemian life in a circus trailer?... a warm day in the provence... I park my colored roulotte on a chilly, rushing river, nestling under shady trees and the sun slowly sinks towards the horizon. I sit on the steps of my wagon, my colored, floating gown keeps the upcoming coolness still a bit away from me. a glass rosè wine in my hand, I curve longingly into distance... there I see somebody comming straight towards me, through the dense green of the trees. he gets closer, now he's only a few steps away, I can hear his breath... he looks at me with a promisingly smile...yes, of course, now I recognize him... johnny... it's my johnny. he takes off his hat, the long strands of hair fall enticing around his face." good evening, you have a wonderful wagon, madame... oh excuse me, I haven't introduced myself, how awfully rude of me. my name is johnny, johnny depp. can I join you for a while?" of course he can... of course! I knew it always and forever...we belong together! now he also grasp it... or at least, after I have shown him my roulotte inside. oh god, becomming a gypsy, was the best decision of my life...hell yeah,...I have to call jeanne immediately, I need the damned circus trailer...right now!

the captivating home of  Jeanne Bayol...
I love, love ,love....it!!!
the colors, the style...just adorable!

... and if I didn't managed to become a happy camper or a romantic gypsy in a circus trailer until my 70th birthday, I still have this very last option for a life on wheels... a really persuasive alternative! footloose and fancy free I'll hit the road and get on my way to great britain...shedding wonderful happy tears at the wedding of kate and williams offsprig... in the first row!... terrific!!

Mobility scooter caravan built to beat Royal Wedding queues

Elderly spectators hoping to bag the best spot on the Royal Wedding procession route, but unwilling to spend a night camping on the pavement, can now buy a caravan designed to be towed by a mobility scooter; the QTvan launched this week is small enough to be used on the pavement, but manages to accommodate a full-size bed.
The £5,500 QTvan is the world’s smallest caravan and is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: queuing, tea and caravans.
As well as a 19” television on which to watch the ceremony highlights, and a drinks cabinet with which to toast the happy couple, the tiny caravan boasts tea-making facilities – essential for a royal day out.
If any extra provisions are needed, the caravan is so compact it can be towed inside a supermarket.
The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) developed the QTvan to highlight the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover and face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat.
Spokesman for the ETA, Yannick Read, said: “An increasing number of people rely on mobility scooters, but if you develop a fault or run out of battery power and don’t have breakdown cover – or a tiny caravan in tow – your only options are to push something that weighs the equivalent of two men all the way home or call on a relative with a large car.”
The ETA warns that the QTvan is best-suited to local trips. If it is used to venture further afield, extra time should be allowed. For example, a trip from London to a popular caravanning destination like the New Forest would take 2 days, while a journey to Whitby would take one week.
From Monday 18th April, both the QTvan (£5,500) and mobility scooter breakdown cover (£49.99) can be ordered from www.eta.co.uk

...wie stark ist das denn??

Morocco, Gardens, Art, Architecture

This is a new book that features the best of thousands of images I took this winter (2010-11) while traveling in Morocco.  Each city or town is featured individually, with the idea of showing the unique character of each place and the artisanship that embellishes them.
I loved being in Morocco so much.  There were many days of blissful contentment, having had interesting social exchanges, and seeing so many amazing things.  Life was experientially rich there.  It is worth looking closely at each photo, as Morocco is about the details as much as the whole.  There are many stories you will just have to imagine that go with every page.

kids of kathmandu

I  ♥  this project!
...kids of kathmandu combines charity, solidarity, hope...and at last design. what a wonderful combination!

"last year, furniture maker andrew raible, and photographer jami saunders spent their honeymoon volunteering in a nepali orphanage, living and working with 41 kids in kathmandu. back at home in NY, the couple continued thinking about the children and decided to start the non-profit organization kids of kathmandu, which utilizes photography, art and design to raise awareness and funds for these kids.
their first initiative, the desk project, is focused on furniture design. they reached out to established new york architects, designers, artists and woodworkers to design and fabricate a child's desk to be auctioned off with the proceeds going towards the children's education in nepal. the idea is that each desk sold will support a child for one year. in response, they've received 11 unique children's desks from 11 different designers (including MADE, uhuru and daniel moyer). The desks are now on display and up for auction."

there are some things in life, you really cling to. maybe because they're very beautiful, or self-made, or because you have a strong emotional connection to them.
... in this case, all of the above.
I've made this adorable silhouette of my children quite easily. now it graces the entrance of our house... and actually every day when I step inside, I'm so glad about it!
... for me, there couldn't be a warmer welcome, except my children in person...running into my arms and telling me the stories and dreams of their day!

to do

snap a shot of your kids in profile and project it full-size on the back of a black adhesive foil. draw the contours, cut it out and stick it on...done!

le charme du maroc 3. & last part

... and the moroccan coast is our next and last goal. we leave the embosomed, lush gardens of skoura and sally out to new impressions.
the trip leads us back to the atlas mountains...this time, with a novel surprise for us... the magnificent views of the outward journey changed into white opaque walls - icy blowing snow has swallowed them up...and now...also us. no view, no winter tires and flip-flops on our feet! the serpentine road without crash barriers becomes an adventurous glissade on the edge of the precipice. just for the record...the edge of the precipice! indeed, this is quite an unpleasant situation, but in schā' Allāh and for the kids sake, we blitheful start to sing "little snow flake, little white coat" and slide gently over the pass into more charming pastures.

****

the historic city of essaouira sits enthroned on a solid rock by the sea, surrounded by a massive town wall and proudly welcomes us. the wind, the salty air, the sun on the skin... you take a deep breath and feel life intimately.
instantly, essaouira gives us a smile... it invites us to stroll through the narrow alleys of the souk, to enjoy the sunny views of the sea, to admire the fishermen and their fish and the artists and their art... and finally to abandon ourselves to it's swinging rhythm... even today you still feel the hippie atmosphere of the 70s...in the hidden corners of the medina and on the lively plazas in the cafes...
delightfully, we sip a freshly squeezed orange juice, allow ourselves a morsel of seafood delicacies and look happily ever after...
yes, this is the perfect place to slowly end this wonderful, adventurous trip... we blissfully sigh with pleasure and enjoy the last days of moroccan hospitality with a smile.

where to stay...
