after approx. 120 miles of journey, comming from marrakech - going to the east, when you just left the atlas mountains with their breathtaking views behind, you reach
aït ben haddou. a ksar (fortified berber village) consisting of six interlaced kasbhas and an old granary, which softly cling to a hill and melt with it to a magnificent view. build with mud in traditional style, it carries you away into another time. since the 11.cent, aït ben haddou acted as a caravanserai between timbuktu and marrakech and accommodated up to 1000 people.
today, you still take the winding alleys like a conqueror.... higher and higher on the mountain. the blazing sun converts the red walls into a big glow... until they release the mountain and you behold the sweep of the horizon... the oasis, the mountains... so stunning and beautiful...almost unreal.
for a reason aït ben haddou was scenery for countless films... a place you'll never forget.

where to stay...

*****

...beautiful, relaxing and verdant haven in the palmeraie of skoura, in the foothills of the atlas
blissfully off the beaten track – you leave the tarmac road, past kasbahs, small villages and dry river beds – les jardins de skoura is an oasis of stylish accommodation. it's set in huge gardens crammed with sunflowers, vines, apricot, olive and pomegranate trees.
each of the 8 individually styled rooms and suites has unfussy, quirky furnishings, contributing to a laid back and comfortable atmosphere.

skoura is...a walk among palm groves and ruined kasbahs, relaxing in hammocks under rustling trees, a refreshing swim in the pool, the scent of the tajines...a berber omelet, enriched with moroccan herbs and spices and an adventurous trip to the breathtaking landscapes of the atlas foothills and the dades gorge.

les jardins de skoura is very close to what I expect from the garden of eden...a magic place of unspoiled nature, contemplation, joy...and really good food!

marrakech... the name as promisingly as the city itself. a city full of contrasts, which wants to be conquered. it does't try to please and to flatter... to catch the charm, you must forget your expectations and visions and allow yourself a closer look. the real marrakech... it's often gruff - but sometimes also softly and delightfully. just now, it plays the furious lover, in a rage and deep desperation, only to slip shortly after into a purring, cheerful kitten.
the streets bluster, the right of the strong - people shout, animals suffer.
the dark aisles of the medina... they lead you to squares, to palaces, to stork's nests on mosques, to a smiling face in the crowd... and all at once it's there, the magic, you cannot avoid.
... this is marrakech.

the history of a mystic garden

jacques majorelle, son of celebrated furniture maker louis majorelle, was born in nancy, france in 1886. it was in 1919 that he first came to marrakech to continue his career as a painter.

he acquired land in 1924 and began to cultivate the landscape, which is today known as the majorelle garden. in 1947 he opened the garden to the public, a tradition that continues to this day.
following a car accident in 1962, jacques majorelle returned to france and shortly thereafter passed away.

the majorelle garden is one of the twentieth century's most mysterious gardens. it is a place of rare individual expression and mystical force. the garden is an overpowering abundance of vegal shapes and forms representing five continents and reflects jacques majorelle's significance as one of the most important plant collectors of his time.

jacques majorelle's garden is perhaps his greatest oeuvre, a true work of art that continues to capture, mesmerize and enrapture the visiting public. since acquiring and restoring the property, yves saint laurent and pierre bergé have given the majorelle garden to a fondation, to ensure its continuing existence.

the riad 107 is a nice little accomodation (8 rooms) in the medina, just a 5 min walk from place jemaa el fnaa and the souk...

dear deer or bambi forever!

as a child of the 70s, I certainly have wept bitter tears over walt disney's "bambi" and also the conciliatory end of the film was not able to console myself for the real tragedy of the story...although I still have an affinity for bambi, it's not that enthusiastic any more...but I still appreciate a long family walk in the deer park and enjoying the sunny weather! today, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, sika deer...they were all around and inspired me!
